A water engineer and scientist by training, Dr. Ercin has more than 16 years of international experience in research, policy advice, consultancy and capacity building in water management and sustainability. He is specialised in water footprint, water accounting, water use and allocation, river basin management, water efficiency, water risks, the impacts of climate change and weather extremes on water resources and economies.

As a pioneer in the development of water strategies for businesses, he has worked with multinationals such as Heineken, Unilever, Coca-Cola, C&A. He has also worked with intra-governmental agencies such as International Finance Corporation, the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the United Nations and the European Commission towards sustainable and efficient water use in industry and agriculture.

His recent work about vulnerabilities of the European economy on weather extremes under climate change has attracted broad interest amongst decision makers at the EU and the global media such as Reuters, EFE and National Geographic. He is currently creating innovative project ideas, as well as leading research and technical projects about sustainable water use and management in agriculture, industry and river basins.

Dr. Ercin is the author of more than 50 publications and has participated in numerous international meetings, conferences and workshops as a key-note speaker. He is currently leading the “Water Economy” work of the IMPREX project together with FutureWater, mapping the EU’s global water demand and assessing how water scarcity and drought under climate change could disrupt supplies of key food crops that the EU imports.
