A large water supply project is being planned in the Lake Victoria region, Kenya, potentially providing reliable and clean water to around 500,000 people. The Dutch Government supports this project. An Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) was made by the developer. This ESIA needed to be reviewed by a multidisciplinary team of experts. The report has been reviewed, complemented with information received from stakeholders during a mission to the area. FutureWater´s focus was on the possible impacts of the project on water-related ecosystem services, river basin hydrology, and the dependencies of the project on hydrological changes in the upstream basin.
The framework used for this evaluation has been the IFC Performance Standards 3 (Resource Efficiency and Pollution Prevention) and 6 (Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Management of Living Natural Resources), complemented with what is considered good practice.
